Our drive today from A to B was about 230kms but with a few extra drive byes to see different things its always more. We were on the road for five hours pottering around seeing particular sights. Another sunny cloudless day as we continued inland from the Murray River except when we did our off shoots back to the river banks/cliffs.
Shortly after leaving Waikerie our first stop was Rotary Cliff Top Lookout which is part of the Waikerie Cliff Top Walk which we didn’t finish seeing yesterday. We got a closer view of the cliffs we saw in the distance yesterday. Above is looking up river.
Now looking down river, note the wilderness on the other side of the river.
We have now gone to the last lookout on the walk ( which we have been driving to each one, not walking from one to the other) If you look at the Murray river on google earth you will see its changing direction all the time. Curling around like a snake. It had been so still over the last three days going inland away from the coast. Hence the nice reflections on the water.
About another 100kms driving inland from the River we arrived back on the River banks at Renmark. What a lovely town. Quite a bit bigger than Waikerie. Also very clean and tidy. It too would have been a great place to stay but we had to keep moving. Spent a little time wandering around the river banks.
Above and this photo are of the Murray River Queen. An Australian Paddle Vessel built in 1974 as a luxury cruise boat carrying passengers on the Murray River. She is now permanently moored at the wharf at Renmark. She is now used for accomodation where you can stay in luxury with great river views but not going anywhere. She also has a Restaurant on board.
Looking along the river where the Murray River Queen is now permanently moored.
Looking up the river at bottom of the Main Street.
Now looking up the Main Street river behind me.
About 4Kms out of Renmark we arrived at Paringa at No 5 Lock, still on the Murray River. Above and below.
Still in the same town we drove for about 10mins out from town to another part of the river we could see the Red cliffs called Headings Cliff Lookout. Quite spectacular. They had a lookout platform we could climb up for a much better view.
An example of how the Houseboats just moor up and tie to a tree to stay over night when they are travelling along the river,
Looking up River from the Headlings Lookout. Rich orange colour in the cliffs.
Looking both ways down stream to the left and up stream right.
Looking straight down to the river.
Now our next Silo Art in Paringa. We have four Silos painted in this small town.
Just a very small town but so much to see. Locks, Historic Bridge, four Silo Arts and the orange Cliffs. Hence spent awhile here. Stopping to see different things on our way which adds a few hours on to our daily trips.
Didn’t know what to expect here we have SA/VIC border quarantine control mainly because there is an outbreak of fruit fly. Any veg we had I put in bags into the freezer this morning incase we were pulled over but we went straight through. SA is more interested in what comes into their border as they are trying to mainly protect their fruit and possible some veg. VIC weren’t interested they just let cars through.
Just to show what it is like when a three trailer Road Train passes you. We always slow down and let them through as they are always in a hurry. This unit has 62 wheels. We watch outback truckers on TV back home and they are not keen to get behind the tourists.
Still love all the different colours in these wheat fields after they have been ploughed. Different soils different colours.
This is just creamy tussock grass great combination with the red— orange —brown soils.
Such rich colours that change all the time. Love it.
Now on the outskirts of Mildura, where we are staying for two nights. Have seen a lot of grape vineyards so they are all in different colours from still a bit green to yellowy green to autumn colour red. Above and below.
Another thing as we drove through the residential area to get to camp I noticed how clean an tidy this town is. Everyone looks after their gardens and their front bern. All so neat just like when we were kids nearly everyone always looked after their gardens so well. Not like today.
Just pulling into our camp site and rushed out to take a photo of this paddle steamer going down the river. I was so quick camera didn’t have time to adjust looks dark but it was a bright sunny day.
We have a river front site looking over the sand. Don’t usually see a beach this big along the side of the river.
Looking down river right into the sun.
Now right on the river edge. As I have said we are now in Victoria but if you step into the water you will be in NSW. The boundary is right on the waters edge, won’t be in VIC for long. Just a tiny bit in the top left corner of the state. Two nights here in Mildura then going to Hay which will be in NSW.
