On the road at 8.00am. Started off with some fog then it lifted and not a cloud to be seen absolutely clear for as far as we could see. Our first totally cloudless day. Even got hot. We spent eight nights coming down the West Coast of the Eyres Peninsula due to all the quaint fishing towns. Only one night and two days driving up the East coast side. Today we have left the coast going cross country to meet up with the Murray River, bi-passing Adelaide. Won’t be back on the coast until our last three nights in the van going down South of Sydney. After leaving Cowell we stopped at Whyalla, just over 100km further north. Spent some time looking at the foreshore and the spectacular modern designed Jetty. We also drove up to Hummock Hill Lookout which was worth it on a day like today. The foreshore has been set out really well. Continued on up to Port Augusta filled up with diesel crossed over a bridge at the top of Spencer Gulf. Instead of taking the road down to Adelaide crossed over the Horrocks Pass to the other side of the mountain range on to Wirrabara where we are staying tonight.
Leaving the Cowell Foreshore Caravan Park. 8am,
Arrived at Whyalla and spent some time down on the foreshore which has been really well done. This is the town beach
Now walking out to this really modern Jetty not like the old Jetties we have been seeing. It’s like a long straight Jetty with a big circular piece in the middle then continues narrower to the end. Hard to explain but will try to by the photos. I was fascinated by it.
This is half of the circle as below. The little awning at the top is where the jetty narrows and continues straight to the end.
Bottom left of the picture is where the long narrow Jetty meets coming up from the beach. 🤔🤔🤔
Continuing back narrow to the end of the Jetty.
Looking over to Hummock Hill Lookout as we are walking back from the Jetty. We are now going to drive up there.
This is part of the beautiful reserve that runs along this end of the beach.
From the lookout looking down over the jetty.
Looking along the beach from Hammocks Hill Lookout
Driving down from the lookout
Just passed by Port Augusta .
This is the bridge we crossed at the top Spencer Gulf. We are on a the newer bridge and you can see the old one in the back ground running beside it. It looked as though it was just single lane.
The hills we are going to cross, passing a wind farm.
Now approaching the hills where we cross over the Horrocks Pass taking the route down the other side of the hills to Wirrabara.
Above and below crossing over the Pass.
Coming down the other side.
First small town Wilmington.
We are still in the wheatbelt area.
All these farms are now starting to plough the ground getting ready for sowing wheat seeds.
I still can’t get over how many wheat growing farms we have been passing. Amazing, such a big industry.
Couldn’t resist taking this out of the window as we were rolling along the highway.
I think this is advertising. Looks like it’s been there for a long time.
Settle in camp just a very small camp tucked in behind Wirrabara Town. Green grass and very modern amenities. You even get your own en-suite. We walk passed this Mom and baby. Made of wire netting and stones inside!
Went for a walk into the small town across a small bridge. Most of the shops seemed to be shut down. All that seemed open was a bakery/ cafe. We purchased a little apple pie for dinner tonight.
Our camp for tonight then off to Waikerie tomorrow for two nights, where we meet up with the Murray River.
We have now travelled 3,181kms
Silos for Wirrabara which were painted in October 2018. It was made possible through the Government of SA
“Fund my neighbourhood grant” a total of $80,000. To help bring in Tourism.
As the sun was behind the Silos today, I might take another photo tomorrow morning before we leave. I took two photos as the top one shows the man better and the bottom one shows the bird better. The detail on the bird is anazing.
